Cardinal Rules: The Standards That Bring Us Home Safe

Our work takes us into some of the most uncontrolled environments in the industry. Rooftops, confined spaces, live electrical panels, busy roadways. Every single day. That is why our Cardinal Rules exist: Seatbelt Use, Distracted Driving, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry, and Fall Protection.

These are not guidelines. These are the line we never cross.

Lockout/Tagout: Control the Energy, Protect the Person

When we work on equipment that can release stored energy, whether electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, or thermal, lockout/tagout is not optional. Without proper isolation, machinery can start up without warning. The consequences—electrocution, crushing injuries, amputation—happen in seconds. Often during routine tasks when a step gets skipped. Proper energy control is non-negotiable.

Fall Protection: 100% of the Time

Many of us work on aerial lifts, canopies, and roofs. Any time we are exposed to a fall hazard greater than six feet, fall protection is required. No exceptions. A fall from even moderate height can result in fractures, head trauma, or spinal damage. Inspecting equipment, using approved harness systems, and never bypassing a safety step are what keep us protected.

Confined Space Entry: Know Before You Go

Before any work begins in a confined space, we identify the hazards. If a hazard exists, a permit is required to verify it has been mitigated before anyone enters. Many of the spaces we work in carry atmospheric risks: oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, flammable atmospheres. Without proper testing, ventilation, and permitting, these environments can incapacitate a person in seconds, often without warning. Every confined space entry starts with planning, monitoring, and a trained attendant standing by.

Driving Safety: Eyes on the Road

The road is one of the biggest risks we face daily. Collectively, we have made real progress on reducing distracted driving and speeding incidents. But the risk never goes away. At highway speeds, a few seconds of distraction covers the length of a football field. There is no time to react. Staying focused behind the wheel protects us, our teammates, and everyone else on the road.

Your Authority to Stop Work

Here is the part every person on this team needs to hear: you have the authority to stop work. Any time. For any reason. If something does not look right, if something does not feel right, you stop. No task is so urgent that it cannot be done safely. Many serious incidents are preceded by warning signs that go unaddressed. Stop Work authority makes sure those signs get acted on in real time.

This is not about following a rule. It is about protecting the person next to you. It is about making sure every one of us walks through the door at the end of the day.

Our ultimate measure of success is not a number on a report. It is every employee going home safely. Every single day.
